Anthony Joshua has added Tyson Fury’s uncle, Peter Fury, to his coaching team ahead of his highly anticipated heavyweight showdown with Fury on December 12 in Cardiff.
Joshua confirmed the addition while speaking to the media ahead of Wednesday’s kickoff press conference in London, revealing that Peter had already provided him with ideas on his training and approach to the fight.
“I speak to Peter Fury. He's willing to help me as well. Yeah, I'll speak to him. [Peter] has given me some good ideas about our training and our approach, how I can approach this fight and where I can improve,” Joshua said.
Peter Fury previously trained his nephew, Tyson Fury, and played a key role in the British heavyweight’s 2015 victory over Wladimir Klitschko.
The move also sees Joshua reunite with Ben Davison, who previously worked in his corner for three fights between 2023 and 2024.
Joshua had recently been working with Iegor Golub following his latest victories but has now brought Davison back into his training setup alongside Peter Fury.
Explaining the decision, Joshua said he wants to take control of his own performance while incorporating the experience and ideas of his new coaching team.
“What I've got to do is take control of my fight with [Tyson] Fury, but also add their touch. And with these two powerhouses coming together, I think it will be a match made in heaven. I do believe that,” he added.
The coaching changes came into focus during the London press conference, where Joshua and Tyson Fury also revisited their infamous sparring sessions from 2011.
Fury recalled a Rolex watch he had promised to anyone who could knock him down during the sparring sessions, claiming Joshua left with the prize.
“There was a thing about a Rolex watch, as well. If anyone could drop me, I'd give them a Rolex watch, which he said in the past — and guess what? I left that building with a f***ing Rolex on,” Fury said.
Joshua responded by recalling that Fury also left the ring with an injury.
“He left the ring with his Rolex watch, but he also left the ring with a black eye as well,” Joshua said.
Despite the exchanges, both fighters showed mutual respect during the event, with Fury acknowledging Joshua’s achievements while maintaining his confidence ahead of their December 12 clash at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.
